Now, more than ever, it’s imperative to remain focused on workforce development. And, Team S.C. is committed to creating a pipeline where individuals have access to the education and training to fill the most in-demand jobs of today and tomorrow. That is accomplished by embracing a collaborative, multifaceted approach to recruiting and training.

As the state’s lead economic development agency, the South Carolina Department of Commerce is tasked with more than just recruiting new companies to the Palmetto State. From export assistance and workforce consultation to data and research services and much more, Team S.C. is dedicated to supporting the state’s existing industry – small and large. And, one of the most important resources available to companies is the agency’s Supplier Outreach program.

In today’s constantly evolving and technology-reliant world, the importance of maintaining private information online is crucial – for individuals and businesses alike. For companies, a data breach can be catastrophic. According to IBM, the average cost of a breach to U.S. companies in 2020 was more than $8 million, with costs spiraling from lost revenue, downtime, reputation, IT work and more.

As the Labor Day holiday approaches, it’s a time to reflect on the social and economic achievements of America’s workforce. With roots dating back to the late 19th century, the holiday recognizes the lasting impact workers have made to the nation’s strength and prosperity.

Throughout history, the American labor force has proven itself as one made up of grit, determination and resilience. This upcoming Labor Day, that resilience will be on full display.

South Carolina’s existing industry is an engine of economic growth. Last year alone, 75 companies expanded operations in South Carolina – creating more than 5,100 new jobs and over $2 billion in capital investment.

The S.C. Commerce Business Services Division continues to host free monthly webinars that focus on workforce and retention resources for S.C. businesses. Speakers from across the state are sharing information on available staffing programs, workforce resources, state labor laws and regulations and other timely information to assist S.C. companies with workforce needs. 

Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III kicked off a tour of the state’s economic development alliances at the Upstate SC Alliance’s Midyear Meeting on Wednesday, August 25. Leaders from across the 10-county Upstate region convened for updates on the alliance’s activities, economic performance and to network. 

A revolution in the automotive industry is underway, and South Carolina is helping lead the charge – literally. Sustainability initiatives and fluctuating oil prices are shifting the sector toward electric vehicles (EV) as alternatives to gas-powered combustion engines. And, that shift is accelerating within our borders.

Volvo Cars is celebrating the opening of its new education and training facilities. With top company leadership in attendance, Volvo hosted a grand opening ceremony for its Volvo Car University and Volvo Car South Carolina Technical Center buildings at its campus in Berkeley County on Wednesday.
