News in Life Sciences: SCBIO hosts record-setting conference

SCBIOA record-setting number of life sciences leaders and stakeholders from six countries, 26 states and from across South Carolina gathered in Charleston February 22-24 for the organization’s annual conference. More than 500 attendees participated in the event – held both live and virtually – which included the latest industry news; updates from leaders in the sector; addresses by Governor Henry McMaster and Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III; award presentations; and much more.

Of particular note, the sold-out conference included a life sciences industry impact study by University of South Carolina economist Dr. Joseph C. Von Nessen. According to the study, the life sciences employment grew by double digits – more than 42% -- over the last three years. And, these jobs represent economic opportunities for South Carolinians with salaries averaging above $80,000 annually.

The life sciences industry is one of South Carolina’s fastest-growing sectors, with companies across the state paving the way to next generation medicines, medical devices, vaccines and pharmaceuticals. And, events like the SCBIO Annual Conference are key to the continued advancement of this burgeoning sector.
