International: Global Connectivity Continues to Grow in South Carolina

The globalization of the U.S. and South Carolina economies has been a driving force in the business growth that’s taken place within our borders. As we seek to retain and build upon our position on the global industrial stage, providing companies continued access to markets all over the world will be critical.

That is why Team South Carolina is so excited about the recent increases in passenger and freight capacity at a number of airports across the state, including Charleston International Airport (CHS), Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) and Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP). The movement of cargo from one market to another is an essential step in the supply chain, so having the capacity to ship and receive varying assortments of items is an invaluable resource for business growth. In March, GSP experienced that growth firsthand as the airport saw a 42 percent, year-over-year increase in tons of cargo handled.

In addition to the transport of freight, companies also need to be able to move people around from market to market. So, when South Carolina airports like CAE, which has experienced a 6.7 percent increase in passenger traffic over the first few months of 2018, and CHS, which recently launched five new nonstop flights, demonstrate solid connectivity to other markets, it enhances the state’s already-strong business environment.

It’s often said that a key to success in business is relationships. Air travel supports the creation and sustainability of many relationships our state and its businesses have with customers, suppliers and prospects. Over the past year, the aforementioned airports have each experienced increases in passenger traffic of 8 percent or better, helping Team South Carolina develop and strengthen relationships across the globe.

As we continue down this tarmac toward a globally-connected economy, further increases to air travel will play a crucial role in the economic success of the Palmetto State. With ongoing increases in passenger traffic, cargo shipments and the capacity of both, we’ll be able to continue providing unmatched connectivity to markets all over the world, ensuring that South Carolina continues to soar into the future.
