Recycling: Council Holds Meeting, Reviews Annual Report

Today, the South Carolina Recycling Market Development Advisory Council (RMDAC) held its bi-monthly meeting at WEIMA America Inc. in York County, touring the recycling equipment manufacturer’s shredding, grinding and briquetting operations. During the meeting, the group discussed its annual report, which highlights the recycling industry’s ongoing growth in South Carolina.

Last year alone, recycling firms, including WEIMA, announced approximately $500 million in capital investment and the creation of more than 200 new jobs across the state. According to the report, there are more than 500 recycling firms operating in South Carolina, and the industry’s annual economic impact on the state exceeds $13 billion.

Before the meeting concluded, longtime, retiring council member Esther Murphy was honored for her leadership and four years of service on the RMDAC. Representing the glass industry, her seat will remain open until filled. Pictured to the right are council Chairman Wes Westbrooks of BMW, Esther Murphy and Chantal Fryer, senior manager of S.C.
