Message from Secretary Hitt: Celebrating the past, looking to the future

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Those famous words spoken by American astronaut Neil Armstrong as he first stepped foot on the moon July 20, 1969 changed our world forever. Newscaster Walter Cronkite called the achievement "the most important feat of all time."

The space race and subsequent lunar landing captured humanity's imagination and fueled ingenuity at a rapid pace. It drove the development of new materials and industrial techniques.

Fifty years later, that spirit of innovation is demonstrated each day here in South Carolina. From advanced manufacturing to aerospace, the Palmetto State is on the cutting edge of a multitude of industries and technologies. We make some remarkable products, as well as some of the materials to help build those products, including wide body commercial aircraft, premium automobiles, pharmaceuticals, carbon fiber and so much more.

Technological innovation is a key driver of economic growth. Looking ahead 50 years from now, the exploration and implementation of new ideas will play an even larger role in how we live and work.

Team S.C. is committed to being a trailblazer in technology-based economic development, as we strive to be at the forefront of innovation across South Carolina, around the world and beyond.
