Message from Secretary Hitt: Blazing a Trail in South Carolina

In business, things never sit still. They're always changing and evolving. To keep up in such a fast-paced economy, company leaders are constantly working to outdo their competitors and offer the most advanced, cutting-edge products on the market. Recognizing that, in South Carolina, we prioritize innovation and promote the growth of entrepreneurial activity. According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, our efforts are paying off. The number of patents granted in South Carolina increased every year from 2008 to 2015, the most recent year of reported data. That year, 950 patents were granted in South Carolina.

Building on this momentum, last week, Clemson University announced the receipt of 15 new patents, including technologies for monitoring and controlling electric power systems, Cartesian robotic printers, lockable knee implants and composite membranes for hydrogen separation. These patents are a testament to the trailblazing activity taking place across South Carolina. Continued efforts to realize, develop and implement the very latest technology will be critical as we move forward and seek to retain our status as a global industry leader.
