Ethiopian economist Eleni Zaude Gabre-Madhin once said, "Happiness is the freedom of choice." Recognizing the truth in that statement, Team South Carolina's mission is to create choices and opportunities for people in all corners of this state. To do that, we must have a variety of thriving industries, featuring companies that provide stimulating, well-paying jobs. Fortunately, because of our many remarkable existing industry partners, that's exactly what we've got in the Palmetto State.
From agribusiness and logistics to manufacturing and innovation, South Carolina is home to many thriving sectors. This week, to honor the businesses that have helped us develop this diverse economy, S.C. Commerce observed its 27th annual Industry Appreciation week. Culminating with an Industry Impact awards ceremony, the annual celebration gives us a chance to recognize firms that have made significant contributions to their communities and the state as a whole.
In an effort to further diversify South Carolina's economy, S.C. Commerce's Office of Innovation made an exciting announcement this week -- awarding nine organizations with grant funding as part of the Startup Fuel Challenge grant series. Tasked with advancing innovation, entrepreneurship and technology-based economic development, this grant program will help us create even more economic variety across South Carolina.
As we look ahead and seek to create even more choices for the people of this state, it's important to take a moment and celebrate the businesses that got us to this point. Only through continued collaboration with them can we ensure a prosperous future for South Carolinians all across our state.
