Rolls-Royce success story Designing engines for mission-critical power applications
The Rolls-Royce brand is generally associated with aircraft engines or luxury automobiles. However, its South Carolina operation focuses on power systems and large industrial engines. The mtu brand engines made in Aiken County are used in emergency backup power systems, hospitals, universities and municipal facilities as well as industrial and other mission-critical power applications. This unique product offering is an example of South Carolina’s sophisticated manufacturing coming together with next-gen energy production.
Providing power solutions for the future
Since production began in 2010, the Aiken County campus for Rolls-Royce Solutions America has grown into a 395,000-square-foot manufacturing complex that includes engine manufacturing and machining, research and development, engine testing facilities and solar and microgrid infrastructure supporting plant operations. In 2025, the company announced a $75 million expansion along with 60 additional jobs to increase production of mtu 4000 engines in response to the high demand for backup power.
Specialty training advances jobs
Not surprising, specialized training is required for production of mtu brand engines. To provide this specialty workforce, a high school apprenticeship program was pioneered in 2012 and has trained more than 70 students to become part of the next generation of skilled manufacturing professionals. To complement this effort, the Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits for this project.
We are proud to support America’s growing demand for reliable, domestically made energy systems that strengthen our nation’s energy independence and security.
