SC NEXUS for advanced resilient energy

South Carolina is helping shape the future of energy through SC NEXUS, the nation's first and only statewide-designated US Tech Hub.

Powering new energy technologies

By connecting research institutions, entrepreneurs, manufacturers and industry leaders, SC NEXUS helps new technologies move from concept to commercialization. Through a growing network of testbeds, workforce initiatives and innovation partners, companies can develop, test and deploy advanced energy solutions that strengthen grid resilience, support national security and power long-term economic growth.

SCNEXUS & Tech Hubs designation

Tech Hub lifetime designation

In 2023, the US Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) designated the SC NEXUS for Advanced Resilient Energy (SC NEXUS) one of 31 Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs nationwide. Led by SC Commerce, SC NEXUS, a consortium of more than 50 members, aims to be a global leader in advanced resilient energy by developing, testing and deploying exportable electricity technologies tools.

SC awarded federal funding

In July 2024, the EDA awarded funding to four SC NEXUS projects to further build out the Tech Hub’s capacity to quickly commercialize new energy technologies, as well as raise awareness of advanced energy employment opportunities. SC NEXUS is one of only 12 tech hubs across the nation to receive the EDA’s implementation grant funds.

Statewide expansion

In January 2026, the US Economic Development Administration approved the expansion of SC NEXUS to include the entire state, creating new opportunities for companies, communities and partners across South Carolina to engage with the Tech Hub.

The mission of SC NEXUS

SC NEXUS leverages the region’s dynamic manufacturing base, superior research capabilities and proven record of public-private collaboration to commercialize emerging energy storage materials and manufacturing techniques, as well as strengthen domestic manufacturing and national energy security.

From innovation to implementation

SC NEXUS brings together specialized research facilities, commercialization resources and workforce initiatives to help advanced energy technologies move from development to deployment. Each project addresses a different part of that journey, creating a connected system for testing ideas, building companies and preparing talent.
