Michelin North America, Inc. success story Establishing a US presence in South Carolina
France-based tire manufacturer, Michelin, announced plans in 1973 to begin major manufacturing operations in the United States with a new tire plant in Greenville County. At the time, the project represented the largest single foreign investment in the state’s history. Michelin North America has grown exponentially since, investing in Greenville as its US headquarters, undergoing multiple expansion projects and becoming one of the largest corporations in the state. Today, Michelin operates 15 plants in South Carolina.
Decades of continued growth
By 2011, Michelin North America had already invested more than $1 billion in South Carolina. Major expansion projects over the next few years added an additional $1.4 billion and created more than 1,200 jobs. Repeatedly reaffirming its commitment to the state, Michelin invested heavily in Anderson, Lexington and Spartanburg Counties to expand tire building capacity, grow rubber production, serve a variety of business segments and improve global distribution capabilities.
The foundation of the state’s strong tire industry
Michelin North America’s presence and significant investment led South Carolina to emerge as a true heavyweight in the global tire industry. State leaders, the SC Department of Commerce and the Coordinating Council for Economic Development have supported the company’s massive expansion efforts by cultivating beneficial relationships and providing state and local incentives, grants and job development credits. Thanks in large part to Michelin North America, South Carolina is now #1 in tire production and leads the nation in tire export sales.
Michelin’s continued investment in Anderson County and the state of South Carolina is a testament to our proven, high-quality workforce here.
