Message from Secretary Hitt: The future of logistics

In economic development, it's no secret that companies locate where they know they can be profitable and have success. With a prime geographic location and robust port and infrastructure assets, South Carolina offers unparalleled national and global connectivity, resulting in a booming logistics industry.

The Palmetto State has one of the nation's fastest-growing container ports, two inland ports, 2,300 miles of rail lines and more than 41,000 miles of state-maintained highways. Because of these assets, our state has become internationally-known, not only for making things and making them well, but also for our skill in getting those things where they need to go.

From 2011 to 2018, transportation, distribution and logistics-related firms announced investments of more than $1 billion in South Carolina. Now a major economic driver for South Carolina, this industry has great potential for continued growth in the years ahead.

Recognizing this, SC Logistics, an initiative of the South Carolina Council on Competitiveness, is hosting its 2019 Fall Tech Talk on October 23 in Charleston, S.C. Held in conjunction with the S.C. International Trade Conference, the event will showcase innovation and technology that is changing the future of the logistics industry.

Tech Talk Fall 2019 will bring together supply chain and logistics thought leaders, highlight cutting-edge technologies and explore how these technologies will drive South Carolina into the future. Speakers include representatives from DHL, FEDEX Express and Volvo Car Group North America.

Moving forward, whether a company relies on ground, rail or sea to reach customers, Team South Carolina will continue to forge ahead to ensure that we're providing our existing and future industries with unmatched logistics assets.
