Director of Marketing and Communications

As director of Marketing and Communications, Adrienne Fairwell, APR is responsible for developing and executing the SC Department of Commerce’s long-range strategic marketing and communications plans to create awareness of agency topics, generate public support and promote South Carolina as an ideal location for business, both new and existing. 

Since joining SC Commerce, Adrienne has overseen the ramp up of the agency’s social media efforts; and, as a result, total followers have increased by approximately 80 percent on Facebook, nearly 50 percent on Instagram and more than 30 percent on Twitter. Additionally, Adrienne managed the redevelopment and launch of the SC Commerce website, specifically tailored to provide timely, relevant information to its target audiences.

An accredited communications professional with more than 17 years of experience, Adrienne oversees the agency’s brand strategy, content strategy and visual identity and develops plans on how to best execute those strategies through the management of interdisciplinary teams. She also serves as the agency’s spokesperson. An award-winning marketing and communications professional, Adrienne has overseen many successful public relations, marketing and social media campaigns that have assisted companies and their suppliers in garnering positive brand recognition, leading to higher business-to-business engagement and turning leads into sales.

Prior to joining SC Commerce, Adrienne served as the director of Information Services for the SC Department of Employment and Workforce, where she helped develop and implement strategic internal and external communications campaigns for topics and issues affecting agency goals, activities and objectives. She also served as the agency spokesperson with media, directing all publicity, policy and awareness of workforce issues.

Adrienne is an active member of the South Carolina Public Relations Society of America, having served in various board positions, and more recently as the chapter’s president-elect. She is a strategist who gives preference to analytics to help drive business decisions.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of South Carolina and a master’s degree in human resources development from Webster University. She has earned the internationally recognized Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) designation as well as the Certified Public Manager professional designation. She has participated in the South Carolina Economic Development Institute where she received a certificate of completion.
